CHAPTER 18
Wednesday morning Kris was up at six; the alarm of her travel clock had worked perfectly. She planned to re-enact, as closely as possible, Elsaâs actions the morning of her death.
She dressed in loose hiking pants with layers on the topâfitted tank top, T-shirt, sweaterâand, at six-thirty, went to the lobby where the enticing smells of fresh baked breads and pastries from the nearby dining room promised a tasty breakfast. Her stomach growled. She stopped for some water from the drinking fountain, hoping it would help her to will away her appetite until she met Tor in an hour. The calm in the empty lobby reminded her of mornings at home before the kids and Jim awakened. Had it been like this when Elsa had come down here on Sunday and made her phone call? Had Bjornstad figured out yet whom Elsa had called? Had she indeed called home for messages?
âGood morning. You are up very early,â Oscar said from behind the reception desk. âMr. Olsenâs in the fitness room lifting weights.â
âYou mean heâs already up?â Kris replied. âI guess this means I donât have to worry about him oversleeping. Did Fjordposten arrive yet?â
âYes, the copies are in my office. Iâll get you one.â
Before he could do so, the phone rang. Kris waited while he took the call. She watched as he opened the large binder in front of him and leafed through the dated pages showing a diagram of the hotel on each. There appeared to be a page for every day of the tourist season, from May to October.
âYes, I can give you a room with two beds and a private bath on those dates,â Oscar said. She watched him write the name of the party on the diagram, noting duration and date of the reservation. He entered the date the European style with day first, then month. âI will hold those for you awaiting your deposit,â he said. When he finished the conversation, he wrote the information on the diagram of the room for each date it had been reserved.
âThatâs a very organized way to keep track of things,â Kris said.
âYes,â he said proudly. âI designed it; I have used it for years. We also put the information in the computer so the staff can access it quickly. I donât trust those things, something can always go wrong.â
He had a point, Kris thought, thinking of Elsaâs sabotaged data.
âLetâs see. Oh, yes, Fjordposten.â Oscar disappeared into his office. A moment later, he was reading the front page as he brought a copy to her. âHere it is.â He pointed to a headline above an article on the lower right: âExtremist suspected in death of Elsa Jenssen.â A photo of Odd appeared underneath. âIâm afraid this shall bring more reporters here. They disturb our peace.â
The double glass entrance doors swung open, and Tor dashed in, wearing running shoes, shorts, and sweat-soaked T-shirt, his face dripping with moisture. He barely slowed his pace when he saw her.
âItâs going to be a beautiful day, maybe even hot.
